Hello,
I helped Al with Callie's medications at Costco. Al became a friend of mine over the years. We bonded over bird hunting and dogs. He gave me some pheasant recipes that ended up being delicious! I hadn't seen him in a while... It makes sense now. I am so sorry to Al's family. He was always so positive about his health struggles, and he would light up when he was able to take Callie for the weekend and spend time with her. He will be missed! I will miss seeing him and talking to him at Costco. Sending my condolences!!

Al, Sue, Debbie &Tim were cherished neighbors when we first moved to Idaho in the 70’s. Al & my husband John played volleyball together in those early years. In recent years, I would occasionally run into Al at Super 1 in Hayden. He always had a positive outlook and was fun to reminisce with about “the old days” in CdA. I was privileged to have known him and know what a loss this must be to his family. He was definitely a member of “the salt of the earth club”. My condolences to his dear family. In Sympathy, Julie

I met "Big Al" in 1994 when he begin working for the Idaho Dept. of Lands in Cataldo. He was a nice guy, a gentlerman, loved dogs and hunting (birds mostly) and as someone else said, a conversationalist. He was hired to inspect logging job's for rule compliance. We quickly learned he was out past dark to do these inspections, I suspect due to the "conversationalist aspect". So to help him, we bought him a used spot light. I pulled several pranks on Big Al and being the gentleman he was, he always returned the favor, usually with a little "vinegar" on top. I'll miss my old friend and his dogs but so glad I got to know him. Rest in peace Big Al, hope the hunting is good in heaven.

Al was a great friend to have and I as well as the rest of the dog lovers will miss him dearly. He always made me feel special when he stopped by SMC in Kellogg to show me his new pup. The world needs a lot more Al Fonkens to fill this void. My regards to
Al's family as well as his friends that knew and loved him for the great man he was. RIP Brother

Al will never be forgotten. Such a sweet human, very knowledgeable in so many things, and LOVED his dogs! We had the pleasure of getting to know him over the years caring for his pup Callie. We will forever miss seeing his big ol' red van pull down our driveway, our conversations at drop off and pick up, and his selfless kindness. He was a fighter until the end but we know he is now not in pain and was greeted by his loved ones and past pups that went before him. God Bless Al and until we meet again! ~John and Molly Bonville

Big Al was what we called one of the nicest men I ever worked with. He always took time to listen, question, and give his thoughtful response to every conversation. I enjoyed working with Al, and we shared stories about hunting and work, family, and friends. I knew he was in trouble and doing poorly, unfortunately so is my wife, so regretfully I did not get that last conversation with my friend. He was a big man, with a big heart, and a love of his family and the great outdoors. I hope he meeting up with one, or all, of his old hunting dog's and the season is always open and the going is easy.

Al was a true friend of bird dogs, especially the Cesky Fousek. I met him at field tests for our dog club in Jerome, ID. My remembrance of Al was as a great conversationalist. Whether we were at the test or talking on the phone, he was always probing for information on the status of pheasant and sharptail numbers across Montana. We talked about hunting together, but unfortunately never made it happen. In exchange, he always offered great stories of hunting with his dogs. We often discussed common efforts in land management for wildlife conservation. Al's wit and smile will both be sorely missed.

Q: How did you meet Allan?
A: My wife, Jeannie, and I met Allen and Sue and their two wonderful children when I first began working at the Coeur D'Alene BLM office in the summer of 1968, after graduating from the University of Montana with a BS in Forestry.
Allen, Ralph, Paul, and Gary were tasked to train me. We worked together for over 2 years before I transferred.
Al was a great teacher, very good friend, and a fine woodsman!
We became very good friends, and enjoyed their friendship for years.
We were very close with their children, Tim, dinosaur boy, Debbie, pretty blond hair and blue eyes.
Al loved hunting, guns, and shooting. I have often thought of Al, Sue, and Tim and Debbie over the years. We kept in touch for many years.
I will truly miss Al.
Great fun shooting and hiking my friend until we meet again.

Rainbow Bridge
Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for every one of our special friends, so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water, and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly, he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together.
