Post Falls

Joel Medford Backes, age 71, passed away peacefully in Post Falls, Idaho, and ascended to heaven to be with God on November 6th, 2023.

Born on September 1st, 1952, in Newton Kansas, Joel was the cherished child of George Medford Backes and Clytia Zethel Shanks. Growing up, he had the opportunity to experience various places around Oklahoma, Oregon, California before finally settling in his beloved Idaho. His heart belonged to Pinehurst, Coeur d'Alene, and Post Falls.

On April 14th, 2006, Joel found an everlasting love when he married his devoted wife Donna in CDA. Although their time together spanned just under 18 years, their love endured many trials and triumphs. A deep affection always permeated their relationship. To Donna, Joel was the love of her life and the center of her world. She affectionately referred to him as "Poppy." From their first meeting on March 31st, 2006 to their wedding day on April 14th of that same year, their love blossomed into something extraordinary. Donna will cherish and miss him every day until they are reunited in heaven. Joel will forever remain her heart.

In service to his country, Joel joined the army in 1971 and bravely served in Vietnam. He subsequently re-enlisted and dedicated himself once again to military duty in Germany and across the United States. Joel proudly served as a diesel mechanic in Company B 708th Maintenance and willingly volunteered for helicopter recovery missions. In the military community, Joel was known for his larger-than-life personality and unwavering patriotism. His love for this great nation was immeasurable.

Throughout his life, Joel held various occupations. He spent many years working at a pellet mill before embarking on a career as an iron fabricator. Known for his craftsmanship, Joel took pride in creating beautiful custom iron works that adorned numerous homes in CDA and the surrounding area.

Joel's passions extended beyond work. He had a deep love for hunting and fishing, and was an avid collector of guns and other unique items. His animals held a special place in his heart, particularly his loyal companion Tala, the wolf who was always by his side. Although Tala passed away before Joel's own departure, he deeply mourned the loss of his beloved dogs Top and Cooper as well as his Persian cat named Booger.

The mountains and woods of Idaho held a magical allure for Joel. Whether on fishing trips or simply exploring nature's wonders, Joel always made every moment memorable. He possessed a fondness for castle and lighthouses; their numerous cruises on Lake Coeur d'Alene allowed them to experience tranquility while embracing the beauty of their surroundings.

Joel is survived by his loving wife Donna, both residing in CDA and Post Falls. Although he suffered the heart-wrenching loss of his son Joe Michael at the tender age of 18, Joel's memory lives on through Joe Michael's spirit. Additionally, he leaves behind brother Richard Scott Backes and sister-in-law Kelly Backes, who currently reside in California. Sadly, another brother David has also passed away.

Resting in eternal peace with Jesus and his beloved son Joe Michael, Joel's soul continues to shine brightly. Donna takes solace in knowing that one day they will be reunited in the heavens above.
