Harbans Kaur Singh, was born October 28, 1930, to Mohinder Singh Sandhu and Chand Kaur Sandhu, in India and left us on July 14, 2024. She was married to Lt. Col. Kartar Singh on December 4, 1948 in the Sikh tradition. After her marriage she continued her education and received a bachelor of arts degree in English. She also received a Gyani in Sikh studies.
Their daughter, Saviraj Grewal, was born in 1950. Their son, Maheep Singh, was born in 1952, followed by their son, Pradeep Singh, born in 1957.
In the early 1960s she studied shorthand at Davers College, in Mumbai, India. Using those skills she obtained employment as an executive secretary to complement her husband’s military salary, for the sole purpose of providing the best private education for their three children. In 1974 she moved to Southern California where she owned and operated three board and care homes for the elderly and the disabled.
Harbans was a compassionate person with a generous heart and spirit. After her father passed away, she and her husband took over the care of her mother as well as her younger sister; supporting her sister’s college education and arranging her marriage. When her older sister’s husband passed away suddenly, within months of her father’s demise, she and her husband undertook the care of her older sister, and her two children, helping her sister get her teaching credentials, and building a home for them. Her generous nature was not limited to her family. She worked with and donated to an orphanage in Punjab. After her children had all reached adulthood, she devoted her life to prayer. She traveled all over the United States and Canada conducting Sikh prayers, “Akhand Path” as her life’s work. Every action she took was guided by her unwavering faith, inspiring others around her. She moved to Idaho in 2004 and taught Sunday school to the Sikh children, first at the Sikh Temple of Spokane and later, in 2017, at the newly opened Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar.
Harbans is survived by her daughter, Saviraj Grewal & (husband, Kenneth Stone) of Sandpoint, Idaho, her Son, Maheep Singh, of Post Falls, Idaho and her son Pradeep Singh of Sandpoint, Idaho, two granddaughters, Urvinder (Veenu) Keller & (husband, Brian Keller), & Sonia Singh, one grandson, Puneet Singh, 5 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
