Ednah Mabel Grogan

June 27, 1921 — February 1, 2016

Ednah Mabel (Cooper) Grogan, 94, went to heaven peacefully with family members around her on February 1, 2016 at Hospice House in Hayden. Mabel was born June 27, 1921 in Orofino. She grew up on the family homestead on Upper Fords Creek with her eleven other siblings. Mabel met and married Lowell Grogan on September 27, 1937. Around 1939 Lowell and Mabel moved to Spirit Lake where Lowell went to work at the Farragut Navel Station, they raised their four children. Around 1953 Mabel started barber college in Spokane, she apprenticed under A.P. Heggee. After she received her license, Mabel opened a barber shop on Maine Street in Spirit Lake in the old hotel. Around 1959 Mabel moved her barber shop to her home on Adams Street across from the city park, she continued to barber until her husband retired. Mabel was one of the original organizer to set up the first ambulance service in Spirit Lake, she also served as an EMT. There first ambulance was a military Cadillac in the early 50's. Mabel served on the city council for several years, she was in charge of the police department. She also belonged to the JOBS Daughters in Spirit Lake. Lowell passed away in 1976, Mabel sold the family home in Spirit Lake, she had her son Leo build a home in Rathdrum. A few years later she sold that home moved back to Upper Fords Creek where she lived in a modular home on part of the old homestead property. She continued to live there until he accidentally lost her eye. She moved back to Spirit Lake to live with her youngest son Gail and his wife Linda. Spirit Lake was her final resting place. Mabel is survived by two sons Leo Grogan (Nancy) and Gail (Linda) Grogan, a sister Effie McAllister and a brother Ole Cooper both of Orofino, she has eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Lowell Grogan, daughter Beth (Grogan) Winebarger, son Glen Grogan, sisters Emma, Gloria, Ellen, Beaulah and Frankie, Brothers Bunk, Dean, Charles and Tuffy. A Funeral Service will be held Saturday February 6th, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. At the Spirit Lake Presbyterian Church 6174 W. Jefferson Spirit Lake, Idaho 83869. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Spirit Lake, Idaho. A reception will be held at Spirit Lake Community Center 32564 N. 4 th Ave. immediately following the graveside services. The family suggests that memorials may be made to Hospice House of North Idaho 9493 N. Government Way Hayden, Idaho 83835.
