Douglas Marshall

Douglas G. Marshall, 80, of Hayden, Idaho, formerly of Norwell, Mass., Barnstable, Mass., Sandwich Mass., and Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, passed away October 31st at Hospice House in Hayden, Idaho. Doug and his partner Judy Gallagher relocated from New Hampshire to Idaho in 2012 to be closer to family. Doug was born April 29th, 1933. He grew up in Hingham MA, and attended Derby Academy, Groton Academy, and Harvard University. He entered the Navy through the ROTC program at Harvard. He spent his childhood summers on the beach in Centerville, MA, and at Camp Ettowah in Fryberg, ME. Doug married Jean Wright Dunbar in 1957. They settled in Norwell MA, raised three daughters, sharing many happy years prior to their divorce. An avid and skilled sailor, Doug was deeply at home on the water, and shared his love of the ocean with extended family and friends. With significant ocean experience, he did not shy away from sailing in tough conditions, instilling an indelible love of adventure in his children. He served in the US Navy and the Naval Reserve, with tours on the USS Miller DD535 and USS Leonard F. Mason DD852, and retired from the Naval Reserve as a Lieutenant Commander in 1975. While later interests led him away from military might as the dominant approach to solving conflict, he highly valued his naval experience. A consummate contributor and leader, Doug joined and led an enormous range of organizations wherever he went, contributing his infectious sense of humor and his aptitude for problem solving. He chaired the Board of Deacons at UCC Norwell, served as trustee at Andover Newton Theological School, led choral societies and men's groups. He taught at community college, worked towards universal health care, contributed significantly to the Beyond War movement, and worked actively with Business Executives for National Security. For most of his career, Doug served in the family business -H. Newton Marshall Co. - a New England-based industrial painting company. He worked as an estimator, salesman, and project manager before buying the business and taking over as president. As elsewhere, he treated his employees with respect and dignity. He served as chair for the National Joint Painting and Decorating and Drywall Apprenticeship and Training Committee in DC, and worked for 4 decades to strengthen labor-management relations. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gordon Preston Marshall and Grace Helena (Bullock) Marshall, his brothers Samuel Marshall and George Marshall, and his first wife, Jean Dunbar Maryborn. He is survived by his partner Judith Gallagher; daughters Elizabeth Marshall, Cynthia Marshall, and Kimberley Marshall; son in law Eric Schmidt; former son in law Michael Welp; Kim's partner Rod Barcklay, and grandchildren Aubrey Vaughan, Jonah Vaughan, Micah Vaughan, Anna Schmidt, Claire Schmidt, Lydia Welp and Nina Welp. Reflecting his constant interest in learning and growing, Doug explored a variety of spiritual paths. In preparation for his passing he liked to share the following quote: "He reached the point in his cosmic journey where his body could no longer sustain his adventuresome, healing spirit."
